Summer Preparedness Checklist
3
When the weather heats up, the sun comes out and the forecast may project summer rain and thunderstorms. Ensuring your roof is ready for all types of summer weather and storms is important.
Your roof is made of multiple layers and protects your family by preventing the outside from coming in.
Clean Your Gutters
Cleaning your gutters of debris is always a smart chore to include year-round. Leaves from trees, pests, and other debris can get stuck in the gutters, causing them to not perform their job at top efficiency.
Visual Inspection
When looking at your roof from the ground, on a ladder, or even from the inside of your home, take note of these issues.
Be looking for:
- Stains on the ceiling or walls
- Missing shingles
- Granules in your gutters after the rain
- Cracked or curled shingles
- Lichen or moss growing on exterior near the roofline
- Cracks, rust, or old caulk around vent boots or chimney flashing
Trim Trees
Although this isn’t directly a part of your roof, trees can be knocked down by the wind, and if they hit your home, it can be catastrophic.
In windstorms, tornados, or hurricanes, big branches or entire trees can end up in a completely separate location than where they were planted.
When trimming, if you know how, make sure any branches in danger of falling on or near your roof are trimmed.
If you do not usually tree trim yourself, hire a professional to do the job for you.
Professional Inspection and Repairs
If you notice damages, call a professional to further inspect and repair or replace your roof. Repairing the small issues with your roof prior to summer storms or heat waves can help prevent any further damage.
It also can save you money by stopping the spread of the damage, no matter how big or small.
